Cold Water and Czech Spa Wafers

“Daddy, the hot water is gone!” Avery exclaimed to me while I was in the middle of an important phone call this afternoon. I heard her, but I wasn’t listening. It’s one of those classic dad moments where I heard the words but I didn’t take them to heart and continued my phone call. A friend tried calling my phone, but I declined it because the call I was already on. I also heard Bethany’s phone ring and still ignored it (lets just pause here and thank the Lord that nothing dangerous was going on because no amount of warning would’ve alerted me unless I was actually on fire or something). Fifteen or twenty minutes later I hung up from my call and Avery said again, “Daddy, the hot water is gone!” Confused still, I said, “Where’s mommy?!” She pointed to the bathroom and that’s when I heard Bethany’s voice, “I’m in here!…There’s no hot water!” As she was showering the hot water went off and now she had been stranded in the shower for at least twenty minutes with soap in her hair. That explains what Avery meant!

Water and Food (3/12/15)

Why was the hot water off? Well, that’s a story in a story. Last week while the plague swept our house we got a notice regarding the gas meter being replaced. Mostly we understood it but were a little confused about the times and day they would come. I guess the gas company people did show up but our doorbell is broken so we didn’t hear them. Yesterday we got a phone call that was completely in Czech and I was so confused and did my best to understand. Could this be the gas company trying to call? I thought I understood the man on the phone asking me when we would be home, but my Czech just isn’t good enough to respond and I was already unsure what was going on or who I was even talking to. Finally, after a few minutes of frustration, the caller said “goodbye” to me in Czech. This morning Bethany got a phone call in Czech. Was it the gas company? Just like me she was confused and the caller hung up when they couldn’t communicate either.

Fast forward back to the cold shower. I ended up boiling hot water for Bethany so she could rinse off and no longer be stranded. I checked the hot water boiler we have and I could see the pilot wasn’t lit. It’s not a hot water heater, and doesn’t store hot water in a tank like most places in the States; it kind of heats water when you need it. That’s when I called back our friend who tried calling me while I was on the phone. Basically, she told me the gas company talked to our landlord and replaced the meter this morning thus turning off our gas while Bethany was showering, and she added they weren’t happy about all the miscommunication. She also told me that the water heater would be off and need to be relit which of course we already knew at that point. I was thankful for the clarity. I did finally get the boiler pilot light lit again. A little Googling and a lighter got us back in business.

Water and Food (3/12/15)

We continued working on language stuff with Jenny and Landen this afternoon and they brought us a special Czech treat that we had never had before. It’s called “Kolonada” (shown above) and they said it’s a pretty traditional treat that Czechs give as gifts when visiting your home. It’s like a thin wafer with sugar and hazelnuts inside and it was delicious! Here’s another picture of it.

As for language, it’s coming along albeit very slow. We are putting together sentences and doing a ton of listening but it’s not fast and it’s not easy. Every day I’m amazed at our progress and continually am asking the Lord for His grace as we learn Czech!

A Day of Water

Hanging With Friends (8/2/14)

Below our apartment we have a basement where our landlord has given us some space for storage. As I was carrying some boxes down the narrow stairwell I stepped off the final step and my foot was suddenly submerged in water. Since I had boxes in my arms I kept walking towards where our space is down the hallway. After turning the light on and opening our storage room door I saw water all over.

Some places were deeper than other but there was water anywhere between a half inch and two inches deep. By God’s grace we had only stored a single cardboard box down there and a few suitcases, but the box was saturated halfway up. It was kind of a mess to clean up because that box was packed full of baby stuff so we had to clean it out, put things in the washer, scrub things in the tub, and get rid of all the wet cardboard. I decided that if a little rain can flood it down there that it’s probably not the place we should store stuff. For now we’re going to ignore that space and figure something else out, but that was just an added project today that you can’t anticipate.

Hanging With Friends (8/2/14)

I’m really glad we had plans to hang with Kevin and Daniela Dickson this afternoon at their house. The Dicksons serve with JV helping direct the EXIT tour ministry here in Czech which uses music to reach young people (that’s a very short summary!). They live about 20 minutes from us kind of tucked away in a valley by a mountain. It was just nice to get outside today in their backyard and enjoy the beautiful weather we had. Swimming was on the agenda so we brought our swimsuits and we and the kids had a great time in the pool together. We also enjoyed some BBQ sausages, hotdogs, and pork outside and the food was fantastic. Here’s a bunch of a photos of our time at their house today and the beautiful Czech countryside.

We have been so welcomed by the Josiah Venture family. Bethany and I were talking on the way home just how great that has been for us and how connected the JV missionaries are to each other. They have all been so hospitable to our family and we are blessed to be part of such a caring and loving group of people. Thank you Daniela and Kevin for reaching out to us and for making us feel welcome here. It means a lot to us and we praise God for you, your family, and the ministry the Lord has called you to.

Hawaii – A Wider Perspective

I think I’ve been a little inspired lately by Jeff Bridges panoramic photos, because for no reason at all I took a bunch of panoramics while we were in Hawaii two weeks ago. And by “a bunch”, I really mean four. Most of these are straight out of the camera, and just stitched together in Photoshop. I’ve added descriptions below each image, and if you want to see the image larger you can just click the photo which will redirect you to my Flickr.

Hanauma Bay, Hawaii
This is in Hananuma Baby. I love the couple in the bottom left getting the classic tourist shot. Everyone in our car was cracking up because the woman kept changing her poses. And we all know it’s the pose that counts.

Hawaii Panoramic
This was just beyond Hanauma Bay. Absolutely stunning to see how blue the water was and to feel the warm wind coming off the water. The power of the waves crashing against the rocks was amazing.

Pearl Harbor Panoramic
This is Pearl Harbor. I shot this from the USS Arizona Memorial center that is across the water from the actual sunken ship. I love American history and this is a must see for any one interested in the subject. Somber place, but the beginning of a long and necessary war. If you look closely, the USS Arizona Memorial is just left of the middle of the image, on the water line (it’s the little white building on the water).

Waikīkī
Last but not least, Waikīkī. The famous beach is just as beautiful as people had described it and Bethany and I enjoyed some Starbucks and walked along the water. This particular shot has about 15 photos from left to right.

A Wife and a Wave

I shot another wedding in San Diego this weekend and since were making the trek down there we figured we would make a weekend of it. After spending some time at our favorite Seaport Village, we took in some of the ocean scene in La Jolla. It was actually kind of nice to just drive up to the edge of the water, park the car, and sit around on the huge rocks and take some snap shots. I know many other photographers feel this way, but I definitely don’t do enough pleasure photography. We’re taking the week off to be with family, so maybe I’ll have some more time this week. Anyways, here’s a few shots from our time (captions below the photos):

A Wife and a Wave
This is my bride. Though I was shooting a wedding, we were also celebrating our 4th wedding anniversary this weekend. If you’re wondering, she’s about 22 weeks pregnant with our first born.

Stay Classy California
Ahhh… Christmas in California. Side note: it was seriously 75 degrees when I took this photo. 75. In the middle of December.

Y-M-C-A
It’s always hard to for me to take pictures of guys surfing because I prefer shots of them when the photographer is in the water with them. Shooting from the shore just doesn’t do that sport justice.

Between a Rock
There were about 9 surfers out while we were there and they were catching some great waves. I caught this guy as he was heading out of the water. I felt like the rocks framed him from where I was standing.

Waving Goodbye
There was a great spot where the waves would flow right up in a huge break in the rocks. I just love the power and beauty of the ocean.

Bethany
Bethany had her camera out too–she’s cute.

Me vs Everything
This is one that Bethany took of me while I was shooting the waves crashing up against the rocks. Initially I was shooting with tight, telephoto lens, but I realized quickly I got much better results from a super wide lens.

Take the Hill
Here’s the angle that I was shooting from in the photo above. I don’t believe it’s the same wave that Bethany shot, but I just loved how this one turned out. I shot it with my super wide lens.

Don't Feed the Birds
Though I love this shot, it doesn’t do justice to what was actually going on when I took it. Bethany and I, and another couple that were walking on the boardwalk were basically running and covering our heads because a TON of seagulls were flocking around this lady that was feeding them. We thought for sure we were moving targets.
