Garden of the Gods

Don’t judge us, but we skipped church this Sunday. It’s not because we don’t like church–in fact, it’s the opposite–we love church. We miss our home church and wish we could spend more Sundays there. But this past Sunday we decided it would be nice to take a mini “staycation” and enjoy some of the beautiful scenery here in Colorado. Many people have told us about Garden of the Gods (or The Garden of God as we like to call it) and we wanted to see it. Thankfully, it’s only thirty minutes from where we’re staying, so we packed up the minivan and ventured out. It was a beautiful day, although a bit windy, but we enjoyed God’s creation and I snapped a few photos for you to see.

Afterwards we went out for lunch and then hit a fun ice cream shop that was recommended to us by my sister and brother-in-law called Josh and John’s. Yum!

Hanging With Cousins

One of the blessings about living in Colorado for a month is that we get the weekends to go see friends and family that we haven’t seen for a long time. This past weekend we got to spend some time with my sister’s family. Our kids got to hang out with their cousins and they all had fun playing on a nearby playground. We forgot to bring our kids jackets so they borrowed from their cousins…us Californians get a little cold. Below are a few photos.

Heather was kind enough to cook us lunch and dinner, but somewhere during our conversation we started to talk about Krispy Kreme doughnuts. I ended up downloading an app that is supposed to tell you when the doughnuts are hot and fresh, but it wasn’t really working. In the end we all went over to Krispy Kreme and they were handing out the fresh ones (even though the light was off)! Here’s a few more photos I snapped with my iPhone before we said goodbye.

We Went to the Fair

Our family enjoyed a Saturday morning at the Antelope Valley Fair this past weekend. The kids’ cousin Jason is involved with 4H and he was showing his rabbit and a pig. We enjoyed hanging out in the barn and seeing all the different animals. Here’s a few pics.

Hawaii – A Wider Perspective

I think I’ve been a little inspired lately by Jeff Bridges panoramic photos, because for no reason at all I took a bunch of panoramics while we were in Hawaii two weeks ago. And by “a bunch”, I really mean four. Most of these are straight out of the camera, and just stitched together in Photoshop. I’ve added descriptions below each image, and if you want to see the image larger you can just click the photo which will redirect you to my Flickr.

Hanauma Bay, Hawaii
This is in Hananuma Baby. I love the couple in the bottom left getting the classic tourist shot. Everyone in our car was cracking up because the woman kept changing her poses. And we all know it’s the pose that counts.

Hawaii Panoramic
This was just beyond Hanauma Bay. Absolutely stunning to see how blue the water was and to feel the warm wind coming off the water. The power of the waves crashing against the rocks was amazing.

Pearl Harbor Panoramic
This is Pearl Harbor. I shot this from the USS Arizona Memorial center that is across the water from the actual sunken ship. I love American history and this is a must see for any one interested in the subject. Somber place, but the beginning of a long and necessary war. If you look closely, the USS Arizona Memorial is just left of the middle of the image, on the water line (it’s the little white building on the water).

Waikīkī
Last but not least, Waikīkī. The famous beach is just as beautiful as people had described it and Bethany and I enjoyed some Starbucks and walked along the water. This particular shot has about 15 photos from left to right.

Jeff Bridges’ Photos Are Neat

I’m sure you’ve heard of the actor Jeff Bridges. Many know him as the “The Dude” from his 1998 role in The Big Lebowski, and more recently he’s been in Iron Man, TRON, and True Grit (which he’s been nominated for an Academy Award in). His film history as an actor is actually pretty extensive, and though I haven’t seen many of his movies, I have seen him on interviews and SNL and he seems like a cool guy.

But what many people don’t know (myself included) is that “The Dude” is a pretty good photographer. I was shocked today to come across some of his work and see that he’s got some excellent shots, all of which he gets using a Widelux camera and black and white film. According to his Web site, he started shooting back in high school, but for the past 16 films he’s done he’s taken his Widelux camera with him on set during filming. Once the movie is done being made, he puts together private photo books for all the cast and crew as a gift. Very cool idea, and these photos are just fun. Check out a few of his shots below and click on the photos to view the book they come from.

Flickr also has loads up Widelux shots (click to search). Below are some Widelux landscapes that are just fabulous:

Just Because Photos

I spend way too much time looking at photography, but not enough time shooting. I’m working hard to change that, and I figured I would start in my own home. These are my just-because-I-can-photos of my family from the past two nights. Bethany has been making pretty things and Titus has been trying to eat them, so I guess it’s been a pretty normal couple of evenings.

Also, I’m realizing more and more that I’m still learning how to use my camera…hard to explain, but it’s true. For you photo nerds, I shot all of these with my 16-35mm f/2.8 and I plan on shooting with it a lot more often. There’s something right about the 35mm–it’s a classic and I think I need to trust it more. But more on that later…on to the photos!

Shutterfly Christmas Gifts

It’s simply because I love my wife that I’m writing today about Shutterfly’s Christmas stuff. And since I know you were just thinking, “Hey, I wonder what company Shay uses to get all his Christmas cards and photo books?”–I have the perfect solution: Shutterfly.

A few months backs Bethany got a little coupon or something for a Shutterfly photo book and so we decided to create one of our son Titus. As a photographer and a designer, I’m always a little skeptical to venture out using some kind of propriety software to create photo books or any photo gift, especially from a mainstream company like Shutterfly. Normally, I would just get my prints done from a professional photo house and then create my book in professional software like InDesign, but since we had the coupon, I figured we could check out what Shutterfly had to offer. To my surprise, their stuff was pretty well done. The software they provided to create the book was user-friendly, the designs for the book were modern and up-to-date, and the options were endless for your book. Everything from the front to back cover, including the book spine, were customizable and we actually had a lot of fun making it. We created a “0-4 months of Titus” book and plan on doing more in the future.

So if you’re looking for my stamp of approval (and I know you were), then I can honestly say we have been satisfied with Shutterfly’s products, at least the photo book. They’re great, simple, inexpensive gifts for parents and grandparents and we like them.

Obviously, they don’t just do photo books. They’ve got everything you’d need, and here’s just a few that you can check out:
Christmas Cards
Photo Mugs (great for the grandparents)
Greeting Cards
And all different kinds of photo gifts
